Company named to Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index for sustainable corporate governance

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Strong climate change disclosure practices have earned Johnson Controls a commendation from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), which also included the company in its Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.

The index is comprised of 67 companies within the FTSE Global 500 Index for their positive approach to corporate governance and climate change disclosure practices.

Companies recognized in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index must participate in the CDP's 2008 questionnaire, with results serving as an evaluation tool for institutional investors. The companies are evaluated on greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets, and risks and opportunities associated with climate change.

As a member of the CDP Supply Chain Leadership Collaboration, Johnson Controls goes beyond minimum disclosure standards by requiring that its suppliers and partners participate in the survey on the company's behalf. "We can better ensure that Johnson Controls is maintaining the highest level of sustainable practices -- from our innovative supply chain management to efficient manufacturing processes and ingenious product and service solutions
-- when we involve our business partners in these efforts," said Charles A.
Harvey, vice president, Diversity and Public Affairs, Johnson Controls.

The Index includes evaluations of the top 34 companies selected from non-carbon-intensive sectors and the top 33 companies selected from carbon-intensive sectors, including Johnson Controls.

Paul Dickinson, chief executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project, noted that "Good corporate governance, including climate change disclosure, will inevitably reap rewards. As carbon regulation increases, companies that have implemented climate change-related strategies are clearly going to be in a far better position than companies that have procrastinated. Good disclosure practices are synonymous with good management."
